In the cross section of the secondary stem at left, the vascular cambium is indicated by the dotted line between the secondary xylem and phloem tissues. Secondary xylem tissue and phloic fibers are stained red.
Pith is composed mainly of parenchyma cells and is located in the center of the stem.
