ROOTS
Secondary Cortex

The image at left shows a cross section of root cortex. The multicolored bodies in this image are amyloplasts--starch storing plastids. Each amyloplast contains one to many starch grains.

Amyloplasts are colorless. Polarized light in the image at left gives the amyloplasts a beautiful color variation and illuminates their cross-like markings.
