The image at left depicts the position of a primary vascular bundle within the mesocarp of a berry. Note the rather thick-walled, closely packed cells of the sub-epidermal layer.

A primary vascular bundle in the parenchyma cells of the mesocarp is pictured at left. Note how the orientation of primary xylem to the inside and primary phloem to the outside closely resembles the primary vasculature of shoots, rachis, and tendrils.
