In the cross section of the embryo at left, the outer integument appears to be composed of tough lignified cells termed macrosclereids. Remnants of the nucellus, the inner tissue of the ovule, is still present. Endosperm is beginning to form and later will expand to crush the nucellus. This endosperm will serve a nutrient source for the developing embryo.
