| LEAVES Trichomes | ||
| | A trichome is a hair-like structure
that is part of the epidermal tissue. The trichomes indicated by the
red arrow at left appear short and pointed. A possible function of these
trichomes may be to deter insects.
| Leaf Abaxial Surface | ||
| | Vitis species vary in the amount
of trichomes on their leaf surfaces. However, many have long, matted
trichomes on their abaxial leaf surfaces. These trichomes may act to
prevent water loss from the leaf surfaces, or they may function as a
layer of insulation against extremes in temperature.
