Terms related to cotton fruit anatomy:
  • Boll: a name for the fruit of cotton

  • Capsule: a simple dry dehiscent fruit, with two or more carpels

  • Locule: a cavity of the ovary in which ovules are found

  • Ovary: the enlarged basal portion of the pistil, which becomes the fruit

  • Ovule: a structure that contains the egg cell; becomes the seed after fertilization

  • Pericarp: the fruit wall that develops from the ovary wall that will form the exocarp, mesocarp, and endocarp

  • Pistil: the female portion of the flower that usually consists of the ovary, the style, and the stigma
