HERE IS AN IMAGE OF THE TOP SECTION OF A PANICLE.  YOU CAN SEE THE DEVELOPED FRUITS, THEY ARE A GOLEDEN YELLOW COLOR.  THEIR COLOR INDICATES THAT  THEY ARE READY FOR HARVEST.  TO GET A BETTER IDEA OF HOW THE FRUITS ARE ARRANGED ON THE STEM VIEW  A  DIAGRAM  OF THE PANNICLE.

Now that we have seen all those panicles lets look at a few closeups

THE ABOVE IS A CLOSE UP PICTURE OF MANY SPIKELETS  NOTICE HOW THE FRUITS SEEM TO CLING ON TO THE RACHIS, OR THE MAIN AXIS OF THE INFLORESCENCE.  THE SPIKELET CONSISTS OF THE FRUIT AND THE PEDICEL. THE PEDICEL IS THE SMALL "ARM " WHICH CONNECTS THE FRUIT TO THE RACHIS.

ABOVE IS A  CLOSEUP OF THE ATTACHMENT POINT OF THE SPIKELET

THIS IS THE RICE YOU NEVER SEE.  YOU CAN CLEARLY SEE THE STERILE LEMMA AT THE BASE OF THE FRUIT.  IF YOU ARE CONFUSED ABOUT TERMINOLOGY VISIT THE  FLOWER PAGE .  IT WILL EXPLAIN TO YOU HOW THE FRUIT FORMS AND  CLARIFY THE ANATOMY.
LOOK AT THOSE FRUITS !!!

HERE IS A SINGLE FRUIT.  NOTICE THAT THE TERM FRUIT IS EQUIVALENT TO THE TERM GRAIN IN THE CASE OF RICE.  IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN A DETAILED EXPLANATION OF THE ANATOMY OF A SINGLE GRAIN, VISIT THE INTERNAL STRUCTURE OF A  GRAIN.

INTERESTING FACT:  AN AVERAGE HEALTHY GRAIN CAN WEIGH ABOUT 25g
