Note that the mesophyll of the leaf
blade appears to be dark green. It is because the parenchyma cells in
the tissue are filled with chloroplasts for
photosynthesis.

In contrast to the blade, the chloroplasts are concentrated to the outside of the sheath. The aerenchyma tissue is composed of mostly air spaces. Some of these air spaces are filled with branched parencyma cells, as shown in the picture below. |
